Medicinal cannabis businesses are being called on to financially support a new documentary aimed at countering the wave of negative media coverage that has surrounded the sector in recent months.
The film, titled In Plain Sight, is the creation of director Jay Richards and has the backing of United in Compassion co-founder Lucy Haslam. Richards has already filmed extensive footage featuring patients and industry figures, producing enough material for a trailer.
A prior crowdfunding effort covered the cost of the initial production phase, but additional money is required to finish the film and secure distribution. The project has a fundraising target of A$200,000, with a planned release date in 2025.
Haslam said: "The limited amount of money we originally raised to get the project off the ground has gone a very long way thanks to Jay's commitment. The reel gives us something to demonstrate what we are trying to do.
"Unfortunately, it has been all bad news in the medicinal cannabis space for some time now with unethical and profit-driven behaviour putting patients at risk and harming the reputation of the industry. I think it is time we tried to reverse this situation.
"This can only benefit the industry so I hope the companies in it will help us to see the documentary through to completion."
