The Australian Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA) has opened a consultation period, calling on members to submit feedback on its Nursing Scope of Practice Guideline 2025.
The document outlines six standards – assessment, care planning, implementation, evaluation, ethics and advocacy – offering practical direction for nurses working alongside medicinal cannabis patients.
ACNA operates as a sub-association of the Australian Medicinal Cannabis Association (AMCA). It was founded during the inaugural Medicinal Cannabis Awareness Week in February 2023 to give nurses and nurse practitioners working with endocannabinoid therapies a dedicated professional forum.
The guideline was reviewed by registered nurses Jodie Davis and Deb Ranson, as well as nurse practitioners Simone O’Brien and Jane O’Connell.
O’Brien, ACNA’s Director of Clinical, told members: “As with any Scope of Practice Guideline, you still own your scope and you work within it, based on your education, training and skills. I am sure that you will all be able to identify where you sit within the six standards.”
The document is scheduled for review in 12 months.
