After years of debate, Germany has passed legislation to legalise recreational cannabis, following the coalition government's announcement of its intentions back in 2021.
The CanG bill cleared the Bundestag on Friday by a vote of 407 to 226. Under the new law, adults will be permitted to carry up to 50 grams of cannabis and grow as many as three plants at home for personal use.
Certain provisions are expected to take effect on April 1, though the legislation must still clear the Bundesrat, a process that could introduce amendments or push back the timeline.
Beyond domestic resistance, the measures had also drawn scrutiny over whether they would breach European Union rules.
With the bill now passed, Prohibition Partners CEO Stephen Murphy said other EU countries must now "take note".
