Cannatrek has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan's Mie University, aimed at advancing medical research on cannabis use.
According to the company, the agreement is the first MoU for medicinal cannabis research ever established between Australia and Japan.
The deal comes on the heels of a shift in Japanese government policy, after the country's lower house passed legislation late last year to legalise the medicinal use of cannabis.
Cannatrek CEO Tommy Huppert said: "We are honoured to be the first Australian business to have a MoU for medicinal cannabis research with a Japanese organisation.
Cannatrek's Shepparton, Victoria facility recently received Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) accreditation, which Huppert said would strengthen the company's export prospects further.
The MoU outlines a cooperation framework spanning agronomic research, clinical training resources, pharmaceutical supply chain management, e-healthcare, regulatory and compliance navigation, and the connection of industry experts.
