School’s out (of it): great-grandmother in trouble after teen shares cannabis muffins with classmates

An Australian great-grandmother ended up in court after allowing an unidentified teenager to use her cannabis-laced butter to cook muffins to share with friends at school.

Pam Annette Bickerton, 74, faced a pre-sentencing hearing at Adelaide Magistrates Court last week after admitting to one count of supplying or administering a controlled drug to a child.

She had prepared the drug-laced butter to manage sleep apnoea, but was woken by the teenager who asked to use it to bake muffins.

Her lawyer told the court: “Still in a state of tiredness… she said ‘go for it’ – just make sure that you clean up afterwards.”

The court heard Bickerton was “extremely remorseful” and felt “very disappointed in herself” when she discovered the teen had taken the baked goods to school.

It was assured she was “much more careful now” and no longer keeps cannabis at home.

Magistrate Justin Wickens said it was “somewhat concerning” that the defendant knew the teen would share the muffins with friends.

However, he told her lawyer that while it was “unfortunate” that the muffins ended up in school, “that is not something that was in your client’s mind at the time”.

Bickerton is due back in court for sentencing on May 4.
