Queensland Labor party members have voted in favour of legalising recreational cannabis, though the state government has made clear it will not be pursuing such a change.
The Brisbane Times reports the updated policy platform was agreed upon at the party's state conference late last year, with the full details only confirmed and made public recently.
Beyond permitting small amounts of cannabis for personal use, the platform also called on the Labor government to embrace a harm-reduction framework for drug policy across the state and conduct a comprehensive review of how drug laws are enforced.
The government, however, has indicated it has no intention of acting on any of those proposed changes.
Although all party members have a vote on the policy platform, any positions adopted through that process are not binding on the government when it holds office.
