A barrister who chaired the review of Victoria's medicinal cannabis regulations ten years ago has joined Montu's special advisory board, where he will provide expert legal guidance to the company.
King's Counsel Dr Ian Freckelton AO brings what Montu managing director Christopher Strauch described as "instrumental" knowledge to the organisation as it works to "enhance the accessibility of medicinal cannabis".
Montu noted that Freckelton has been appointed in a general advisory capacity only and will not be involved in the legal case filed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
Freckelton served as commissioner for the Victorian Law Reform Commission in 2014, which examined the legalisation of medicinal cannabis.
In 2021, he received the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) honour for his contributions to law and the legal profession, including across the fields of medicine, health, and technology.
Freckelton has also led inquiries into allegations of inappropriate conduct involving individuals and organisations.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr Freckelton to Montu as a special advisor," Strauch said.
"His extensive legal background and profound understanding of healthcare regulations will be instrumental as we strive to enhance accessibility of medicinal cannabis treatments for patients across Australia."
Freckelton's "commitment to excellence" and dedication to public service make him an "invaluable addition to Montu's advisory board", Strauch added.
Freckelton said: "I am glad to be able to advise Montu as it works to improve access to medicinal cannabis in Australia."
