Hong Kong's government has announced that CBD will be prohibited from February 1 next year, pending a final review by the city's legislature.
Under the plan, CBD would be designated a "dangerous drug" — a category that includes heroin and cocaine — exposing users to lengthy prison sentences and substantial financial penalties.
While CBD-infused products are currently sold legally in Hong Kong, a government spokesman warned: "The trade and the public should arrange early disposal of any CBD products in their possession to avoid contravention of the law."
New chief executive John Lee has adopted a hardline stance on drugs since assuming office in July. China had already moved to ban CBD from cosmetic products the previous year.
