Helius Therapeutics cleared to produce THC-based medicines in New Zealand

MedSafe has awarded GMP certification to Helius Therapeutics, authorising the company to manufacture medicines containing THC.

Industry sources indicate that locally produced THC products from Helius could reach New Zealand patients within weeks. The certification also satisfies EU-GMP requirements, which positions the company for potential export markets down the line.

The announcement follows news from last week that the company had received Good Agricultural and Collection Practice (GACP) certification for its medicinal cannabis facility located in East Auckland.

Chief executive Carmen Doran said the milestones "allow us to bring more NZ-grown and made products to Kiwi patients".

She added: "The GMP certification process has been exhaustive, and rightly so. We're making medicines, so there is no room for cutting corners.

"Helius pulled together an internationally-experienced leadership team from both the pharmaceutical and medicinal cannabis industries to successfully achieve this level of compliance.

“[We have] built the team and facilities to get the job done, motivated by an unwavering commitment to improve patients’ quality of life.”
