Professor Tony Lawler Appointed to Lead the TGA

Professor Tony Lawler, who previously served as Tasmania's chief medical officer and deputy secretary of Clinical Quality, Regulation and Accreditation at the Tasmanian Department of Health, has been named as the new head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

The health regulator did not make a formal announcement of the appointment, but Professor Lawler took to LinkedIn to share the news, describing his new role as deputy secretary of the health products regulation group as a "great new challenge".

He replaces John Skerritt who retired in April.

Professor Lawler completed his medical degree at the University of Tasmania and has spent nearly 30 years working across the health sector in roles spanning specialist emergency medicine, specialist medical administration, and senior public service positions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as the Emergency Operations Commander for the Tasmanian Health Service.
