Federation TAFE in Ballarat is set to roll out nationally accredited courses in medicinal cannabis cultivation and production this year, giving students in regional Victoria a pathway into the industry.
Two qualifications will be available over consecutive years — a Certificate III launching in 2024, followed by a Certificate IV from 2025.
Federation University Australia provost Liam Sloan told the ABC that an initial pilot would take on between 12 and 18 students, with the qualification expected to open up employment prospects across regional Victoria.
He added: “It’s a traineeship model where students will be working, earning and learning… a real multiple benefit. We know it’s a growth industry, so there is a sustainable career there for these individuals.
“They will also be studying units that span regulatory requirements, propagation, harvesting and pre-processing, operating equipment, health and safety.”
The Certificate IV will build on the foundational course by incorporating management and leadership units.
Throughout their studies, students will be employed, allowing them to develop hands-on skills within licensed, controlled medicinal cannabis growing operations.
Federation TAFE delivers vocational education and training through Federation University Australia, with an emphasis on work-based learning tied closely to employment outcomes.
Melbourne-headquartered cultivator GemKom has entered a partnership with the institution to provide students with practical, on-the-job training.
