Greens cannabis legalisation bill headed for federal parliament vote

Senator David Shoebridge has announced that the federal parliament will vote on November 27 on the Greens' bill to legalise cannabis for adult use.

Shoebridge introduced the bill in the upper house in August 2023. If passed, it would permit recreational cannabis use by adults, allow home cultivation of up to six plants, and establish a commercial cannabis market nationwide.

The legislation would also create the Cannabis Australia National Agency as a statutory body responsible for registering strains and overseeing activities such as growing and possessing plants, manufacturing and selling cannabis products, running cafes, and managing imports and exports.

Shoebridge said he would continue pushing the bill forward despite a senate committee having rejected it in June.
