Byron Bay Label Afends Releases Documentary on Its Hemp Farming Journey

Byron Bay clothing label Afends has released a documentary chronicling the company's path toward cultivating its own hemp.

Shot at the brand's Sleepy Hollow Farm along the Tweed coast, Weed Need Change goes behind the scenes as co-founders Declan Wise and Jono Salfield transition into hemp farming.

The film captures the obstacles the pair encounter and work through, from confronting cannabis-related stigma to finding methods of producing clothing that treads more lightly on the planet.

Founded 15 years ago, Afends has incorporated hemp into its clothing range for some time, though Wise and Salfield purchased the 40-acre property last year with the intention of growing their own supply.

At the time, Wise said: "We started thinking about growing our own hemp about two years ago. The plants will go in this October… we are expecting the first crop in early 2022.

"We could have garments made with hemp grown at Sleepy Hollow by October next year."
