Saged, a medical cannabis education platform owned by Montu, has released a new online learning module built around a case study from basketball Hall of Famer Lauren Jackson.
One of Australia's most decorated athletes and a sports advisor at Levin Health, Jackson has spoken openly about using medical cannabis to manage the chronic pain accumulated over her elite career.
Her case study offers clinicians a real-world account of the difficulties faced by women athletes and the growing place of cannabis-based therapies in contemporary treatment approaches.
Jackson said: "Medical cannabis has been life-changing in managing my chronic pain. I'm proud to support this educational initiative from Saged, which will help healthcare professionals better understand how it can be safely and effectively used to support athletes and patients dealing with long-term pain."
The module is designed to deepen clinicians' understanding of the pathophysiology behind common injuries in women athletes, alongside conventional management strategies for those conditions.
It explores the potential benefits and limitations of medical cannabis when applied to chronic sporting injuries, post-surgical recovery, and endometriosis, and considers how the treatment interacts with opioid use, including effects on outcomes and associated risks.
Participants also receive guidance on identifying appropriate candidates for medical cannabis treatment, developing patient-centred plans that minimise risk, and improving clinical conversations around chronic pain management.
Saged general manager Martin Rose said: "Chronic pain management is a growing challenge in sports medicine, and this module provides clinicians with critical knowledge to navigate the evolving role of medical cannabis in treatment.
"Education is key to ensuring safe and effective patient outcomes."
