The boards of the Australian Medicinal Cannabis Association and Medicinal Cannabis Industry Australia have chosen a name for the combined organisation that will emerge once their merger is finalised.
The new entity will operate as Medicinal Cannabis Council Australia (MCCA), chosen ahead of the alternative proposal, Australian Medicinal Cannabis Council.
Although the chosen name bears some resemblance to that of the Montu-backed Cannabis Council Australia, those involved determined it most accurately reflects the work the organisation will undertake on behalf of the industry.
The MCIA board is understood to have voted unanimously in favour of the MCCA name, while the AMCA board was divided on the matter.
"We didn't want to turn it into a tennis match with a lot of back and forth so went for a majority across the two boards," AMCA chair Dr Teresa Nicoletti said.
A revised deed of merger and a new constitution are expected to be formally approved by both boards within the next 48 hours, after which the two existing organisations will be wound down and their assets transferred to the incoming body.
The boards are expected to operate in an integrated fashion for an initial period — potentially as long as three months — before a new board and chair are elected.
